The PhD Candidate’s Path: Training and Research
In Italian PhD programs, the candidate’s activities are structured to ensure advanced training from both a scientific and professional perspective. Below is an overview of the main required activities:
Educational and Training Activities
In accordance with the Guidelines of the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR) and Ministerial Decree 226/2021, each PhD candidate is required to:
- Conduct individual research under the supervision of one or more advisors.
- Participate in doctoral-level teaching activities for at least 30 CFU (ECTS credits) over the three-year program.
- Take part in seminars, workshops, and summer schools, including those with an international focus.
- Develop interdisciplinary and transferable skills, such as:
- Public speaking
- Scientific writing
- Intellectual property management
- Digital skills and project management
International Mobility
A research stay abroad, lasting at least three months at partner universities or research institutions, is strongly encouraged. These periods may be co-funded and entitle the candidate to an increase in their scholarship.
Research Activities
The core of the PhD program is the development of an original research project, culminating in the writing and defense of a doctoral thesis. The project must be approved by the Academic Board and may involve collaborations with external entities such as companies, research centers, or public administrations.
Participation in Academic Life
PhD candidates are actively involved in departmental life by participating in:
- Meetings and academic board sessions
- Tutoring activities for undergraduate or master’s students
- Organization of scientific events
Evaluation and Progression
An annual evaluation of progress is conducted by the Academic Board. Admission to subsequent years is subject to successfully passing evaluations and submitting activity reports.
Compatibility with Other Activities
The PhD program is considered a full-time commitment. Employment or other professional activities are permitted only if authorized and consistent with the research pathway.
