The PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) represents the third and highest level of university education.
To be admitted to a PhD program, candidates must hold a Master’s degree (Laurea Specialistica/Magistrale) or a degree under the former Italian university system, or a foreign qualification recognized as suitable solely for admission purposes.
The PhD Program in Translational Molecular Medicine and Surgery has a duration of three years and is characterized by a dynamic and participatory approach that integrates scientific and cultural developments with ongoing dialogue with stakeholders (industries, research institutions, and others), as well as with external and international members of the academic board. The aim is to ensure the quality, relevance, and up-to-date nature of the educational and research pathway.
The PhD Program encompasses various disciplinary fields and is open to graduates from multiple degree classes with a strong inclination toward translational medical and biological research. The program is designed to train future researchers capable of developing projects that bridge the gap between laboratory activities and clinical sciences, from bench to bedside and vice versa.
The program also offers a rich educational curriculum, including structured learning activities, specialized seminars, and formal opportunities for interaction among PhD candidates, faculty members, and experts in fields related to the program’s training activities.
The training pathway aims to foster the development of critical thinking, creativity, and analytical skills in order to promote the intellectual autonomy of future researchers. This objective is achieved by involving PhD candidates in research programs supervised by highly experienced faculty members, both nationally and internationally, and conducted in modern, well-equipped laboratories. In addition, PhD candidates are encouraged to undertake research periods abroad as well as within partner companies affiliated with the PhD program.
Admission to the PhD program is limited in number and selection takes place through a public competitive examination.
The title of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is awarded upon passing the final examination, which consists of the defense of the PhD thesis.
